The use of this word in the packaging of a product is regulated in the United States, and can not be used without prior certification. This is obtained through a process in which the United States Department of Agriculture <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/topics\/organic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(USDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, inspects each step of the production, processing, packaging, and labeling of the product to ensure compliance with federal and organic standards. This certificate is given by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforest-alliance.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rainforest Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an international non-profit organization working to build strong forests, healthy agricultural landscapes, and thriving communities through creative, pragmatic collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the meaning according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/greenerchoices.org\/2017\/09\/06\/rainforest-alliance-certified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumer Reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rainforest Alliance Certified seal means that some or all of the ingredients are sourced from farms that comply with the standards of the Sustainable Agriculture Network, which aims to promote sustainability in farming and protect farmers, forests, wildlife, and local communities. The seal is verified through on-farm inspections.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>NON-GMO<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1045\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gmaids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Non-GMO-Project-Verified-seal-300x220.jpg?resize=150%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This label means that the food product was produced without genetic modification and its ingredients are not derived from GMOs<sup>2<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, the product complies with the Non-GMO Project Standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nongmoproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Non-GMO Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an independent non-profit organization with the mission of preserving and creating product sources without genetic modification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the meaning according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/greenerchoices.org\/2017\/04\/03\/non-gmo-project-verified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumer Reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Non-GMO Project Verified seal is verified and is a highly meaningful label for consumers wishing to avoid GMOs in the foods they buy and to support farmers who don\u2019t use GMOs. It means producers complied with the Non-GMO Project\u2019s standards, which are aimed at helping consumers find foods without GMOs. \u201cGMO\u201d stands for genetically modified organism and refers to plants, animals, or other organisms whose genetic code has been changed in ways that do not occur naturally.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Naturally Grown<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1046 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gmaids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CNG-300x300.png?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gmaids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CNG-300x300.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gmaids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CNG-300x300.png?resize=120%2C120&amp;ssl=1 120w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gmaids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CNG-300x300.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This label means that the food product comes from farms that do not use synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers or genetically modified organisms. In order for the product to carry this seal on its packaging, it must comply with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cngfarming.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certified Naturally Grown (CNG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> standards and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards for organic production. In order for the farm to obtain the certificate, an inspection is carried out by another farmer certified by Naturally Grown. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the meaning according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/greenerchoices.org\/2017\/08\/07\/certified-naturally-grown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumer Reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seal means that the farm meets the Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) standards, which are based on the USDA organic standards for crops and livestock. These standards promote a sustainable system of agriculture, requiring responsible soil management and prohibiting the use of synthetic fertilizers, most synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, and artificial hormones. For verification, the CNG program uses a peer-review system, where the farmer sets up an inspection by another farmer, extension agent, or three of the farm\u2019s customers, instead of using a third-party certification agency.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are some of the most common and meaningful seals and labels that we can find in produce and other food and personal care products. There are others specific seals for certain types of foods such as meats, chicken, milk, eggs, fruits, and vegetables.
