Staying committed to exercise can be a constant struggle. You’re busy. You have kids. You work a demanding job.
So it’s no surprise that people want a workout that gives them a kick and combines different elements that help achieve a fine form and fitness level. Many run, while others cycle. There are a variety of different ways to get in aerobic activity.
Most of us need more to lose weight or stay fit. We need to build muscle. We need to become more limber as we age as our parts get more stiff and achy.
The Crossfit craze seems to address many of these goals. If you are already in shape, Crossfit can make you fitter, faster. The experts behind the fitness program say the specialized workout will change your body, make it stronger, more flexible, more fit.
Crossfit combines aerobic exercise with weight lifting and gymnastics to enable better flexibility. The program can be modified to accommodate all ages and skill levels. The workout, which is available at 18 different locations in the Fort Worth and Dallas area, is varied with intervals of high intensity. Physiologists believe sporadic moments of high intensity provides better fitness results than maintaining a steady pace of low or moderate intensity workouts several days per week.
Studies show interval training, which is bouts of high intensity balanced with rest periods, is more effective to improving fitness, boosting metabolism and reshaping your body. Muscles adapt to exercise and the theory is if you are constantly modifying your workout, your body doesn’t get used to your routine and continues to build muscle. Crossfit is literally a feel the burn kind of workout.
Can you do Crossfit at home? Sure. If you don’t have weights, you can use alternative items in your house. Your body can act as a resistance, especially when doing strength moves like the plank. There are many resources on the Internet directing you to the contents of a workout. Many of the strength moves don’t need equipment like pushups, burpees, lunges and sit ups.
The Crossfit community says this method of exercise is one of the best ways to lose weight and it can open up an avenue to a new network of friends. There are Crossfit gyms as well as Crossfit classes held by personal trainers. In fact there is a Crossfit community on the Internet where people trade war stories.
Greg Glassman, the man who started Crossfit gyms, was featured in a 60 Minutes piece recently. If Crossfit is good enough for Nascar drivers and The Biggest Loser contestants, it’s maybe a worth a try.
